The original tradition was not tied to any
particular religion. The oldest record of a tree being cut and decorated as a Christmas tree
dates back to 1605.

What kind of Christmas tree should I buy?

That depends on your personal preference, but here are some things to consider. When were
the trees that you are looking at cut? It varies, and it makes a big difference. If you go to
tree farm and cut the tree yourself, you know when it was cut. If you buy your tree from
a local, relatively small tree farm you'll have a pretty good idea when it was cut, or at least
you can ask.

Think about who it is that is selling the trees. Where did they get them? There are really
large tree farms that cut tens of thousands of trees each year and ship them to retail locations
in a variety of different states. I'd venture to say that some of the trees farms do a better
job of shipping a fresh trees than others.

But the truth is, large tree farms have to start cutting weeks in advance of the ship date in
order to fill all of their orders. These farms use varying methods of keeping their trees fresh.
In some cases they cut them and throw them in a pond to keep them moist until it's time to
ship them.

Look at the trees closely. Shop around. Are the needles already starting to look and feel
dry? Grasp a branch and pull away from the tree. Did any or many needles come off. A tree that will easily shed green needles on a sales lot is probably too dry.

Keep in mind, Christmas trees with longer needles, like White Pine or Scotch Pine tend to hold their needles longer before they start shedding. Short needled trees like Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, Black Hills Spruce tend to start shedding needles more quickly. The exception to the short needled trees would be Douglas Fir. Douglas Fir holds it's needles much better than other
short needle varieties.

Taking Care of the Tree Before you Bring it Inside

Unless you buy the tree really close to home, you should wrap it in a tarp or Christmas tree
bag for the ride home. Being inside a warm van or tied to the top of a car will pull much needed moisture from the tree. You should do everything you can to keep the tree as moist as possible
before you bring it inside. If you are not going to put the tree up for a few days keep it outside
out of direct sun and stand it up with the stem of the tree in a pail of water at least 6" deep.

Re-cut the Bottom of the Tree

As soon as a Christmas tree is cut it starts to seal the fresh cut with sap. The longer the tree is
cut, the more sealed the bottom of the tree becomes, to the point of it not being able to absorb
water when you stand the tree up in your house. So as soon as you get it home, cut about 1" off the base of the tree and immediately get the tree into some water. Make your cut straight across
the bottom of the tree. Do not cut at an angle.

Maintain High Humidity Around the Tree

Once you have your tree inside make sure it has an ample supply of water in the tree stand and
check the water daily. Especially for the first few days, that's when the tree will be the most
thirsty. Do not put the tree where it will receive direct sunlight, or in front of a heat register where it will have hot air blowing on it.

Keep in mind, the air in your home is trying to pull moisture from the tree. Your job is to keep
that tree hydrated. Placing a portable humidifier in the same room as the tree helps to keep
your tree healthy longer. Use cool lights on your Christmas tree and never leave the lights on
when you are not home.

Enjoy your tree! In few days I'll send you some tips on caring for a live tree that is balled in
burlap.

Have a great December and by all means stay inspired!
-Mike McGroarty

McGroarty Enterprises Inc.
P.O. We are in the process of reducing our annual inventory to bring in the new Fall Mums and more exciting plants to add to your landscape.

BUY 3 annuals and get the 4th one free. choose from 6 packs to 4.5 inch Proven Winners. Healthy plants like you’ve come to expect –
ready to grace your home and garden.

Help us make room for the new Mums (U of M developed Hardy!) and so many more plants. Perennials and succulents to add to your home and gardens.

Bring in your landscape plans and sketches. Always free consultation and layout available. Perennials, Shrubs and Trees are available at Garden Expressions.

A couple notes and reminders: Please remember to fertilize your annuals with a bloom booster type fertilizer once a week but at least 2 times a month(minimum). Bloom booster fertilizer is the water soluble type or any type that would have a higher middle number such as 10-30-20. Fertilizers (organic or not) are all listed with an analysis of N-P-K. N (nitrogen)is for green and leafy growth. P (phosphorus) is for blooms and fruit. K (potassium) is for roots and establishment of plants. Now, that’s about as much chemistry as I can handle. If you need it, we have some bagged from the bulk fertilizer we use for sale. Please be cautious of over watering with fertilizer high in P- it will promote algae growth on lakes and bodies of water.

Pansies feeling the heat? Trim back the dead blooms and if they are real leggy, cut them back to promote new growth at the bottom couple inches or so. They will be happy to bloom heavily again for you through the frost.

Stop in and check out the new permanent blooms (silk) and garden tools.

We have the best gloves (Atlas- Nitrile Touch) in stock and in your size!

The tools from Garden Works, Weed Reacher, Ken Ho and Potting Scoops, all designed to make your garden time even more pleasurable. It laid at the garden for a entire season. We found Tom from New Richmond to make the holes and raise the windmill. So finally, on August 27th, we were ready to lift it. The neighbor Ralph and his wife came over for some sweet corn and ended up hoisting, bolting and pounding the tower into the base.
What a grand day and super addition to the gardens.

You are what you eat...Eat Veggies!

The cucumbers, zucchini and squash are being harvested in bucket loads right now.
Here are some recipes to try zucchini a new way. Remember a little olive oil or butter and a patty pan squash is simple and delicious just season and grill.

Spicy Squash Cakes
This recipe works well with a combination of zucchini or yellow squash. Temper the fieriness of the jalapenos by adjusting the amount or by removing the seeds and white membrane. Prepare small cakes for an appetizer or larger ones as a side dish or serve with crusty bread and tomato salsa for a full meal. The salsa recipe is in the section on tomatoes.
1 whole egg plus 2 egg whites or use 3 eggs
4 cups grated summer squash
1 cup fresh corn kernels, cut from 2 ears
1/4 cup chopped green onions, tops included
1 large jalapeno pepper, chopped
1/3 cup parmesan cheese
1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper or black pepper
Canola oil for sauteing
Low-fat sour cream (optional)
Fresh tomato salsa (optional)
1. In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Beat in squash, corn, green onions, jalapeno, the cheeses, flour, olive oil and ground pepper.
2. Heat two tablespoons canola oil in a heavy 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. For small cakes, spoon one tablespoon squash mixture per cake into the hot oil and flatten to uniform thickness. For large cakes, use two tablespoons of squash mixture per cake. Do not over crowd the skillet. Leave about an inch between cakes.
3. Cook until edges turn golden brown, turn and cook the other side until golden brown, about three minutes total cooking time per cake. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate. Place in a warm oven and continue cooking the remaining cakes.
4. To serve, arrange two or more cakes on individual plates. Serve with some of the salsa and a dollop of low-fat sour cream. Sprinkle with salt if desired. Serves 6.

Zucchini Bread Recipe
3 eggs
2 cups raw sugar or honey
3 teaspoons Vanilla
1/2 cup olive oil
2 cups drained and grated Zucchini
3 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
3 tsp cinnamon
1 c chopped nuts
Mix eggs, sugar, vanilla and oil together. Beat until well blended. Stir in grated zucchini. Mix in Flour, Baking soda, powder and cinnamon. Mix well. Fold in chopped nuts. Pour into 2 greased 5x9” loaf pans and bake at 350 degrees for one hour.

PUREE OF YELLOW SQUASH SOUP

This recipe is designed primarily for yellow crooked-neck squash ( a summer
squash), but in the winter you can substitute for acorn and butternut.
Ingredients:
1 lb. yellow crooked-neck squash ( approx. 6 small ones)
2 cups chopped onion
1 clove garlic, sliced
1/2 tsp dried thyme (or 2 tsp. minced fresh thyme)
1/2 tsp dried sage
1/2 tsp dried basil ( or 1 to 2 tbsp minced fresh basil) ( I used 2 tbsp
fresh basil -I am glad I did!)
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp unbleached white flour ( I bet wheat flour would be even better)
1/2 cup dry white wine
2 cups milk ( I used 1% WestSoy, Vanilla)
freshly ground black pepper

Optional topping:
2 tsp water
1 small red bell pepper, cut in thin strips
1 clove garlic, minced
minced chives, (I use green onion tops)

Directions: in original form but with my comments.
1) Cut the end off the squash, and peel if the skin looks looks suspicious
in any way. Then cut the squash into 1/4 inch slices and set aside. (I used
my cuisinart)
2) In a large saucepan or a Dutch oven (I used a non-stick pan because I
omitted butter), begin sautéing onions and garlic over medium
heat. After about 5 minutes, add squash, herbs, and salt. Stir, cover, and
continue to cook about 10 more minutes.
3) Gradually sprinkle in the flour, stirring constantly. Continue to cook
and stir over low heat about 5 minutes.
4) Pour in the white wine, stir briefly, cover, and let simmer 10 to 15
minutes. (Note: The alcoholic content of the wine dissipates with cooking,
and the taste of the wine diminishes gradually. So if you let if cook a
little longer at this step, you will get a more subtle result. Just be sure
to stir everything up from the bottom from time to time, so it won't stick
or scorch.) Remove from heat, and allow the soup to cool until it's cool
enough to puree.
5) Puree the soup with the milk in a food processor or blender, and return
it to a kettle. At this point, you may choose to strain the soup through a
fine strainer or a sieve to get a smoother texture. (I don't think this is
necessary at all) Adjust the seasonings. Add black pepper to taste.
6) Heat gently just before serving.
7) While the soup is heating, prepare the optional topping.Saute the bell
pepper and garlic in water until just tender. Spoon a little
bit of this into each steaming bowl of soup, and sprinkle with minced
chives. (my water-sauteed bell pepper strips worked just fine)

Prep time: 45 minutes, Yield: 4 to 6 Servings

To freeze yellow crooked-neck squash (so you can use it later in the
winter), cut the squash into 1/4-inch slices, and drop into a saucepan of
boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain and cool. Then wrap airtight in a
plastic bag or container and freeze.

To use acorn or butternut squash in this recipe, peel and seed a 1-lb.
squash. Chop it into small piecesk and steam or boil until tender. Drain
well. Then simply follow the recipe, biginning with step 2, substituting
this cooked winter squash for the yellow crooked neck.

Adapted from Mollie Katzen's book, Still Life with Menu

The recipe for Pesto follows. But be warned you may be starting a life-long tradition.
Pesto Recipe
3/4 cup olive oil
3-5 cloves garlic
3 cups fresh Basil packed
1/2 cup parmesan cheese
1/4 cup pine nuts
3 tablespoons Romano cheese (or more parmesan)
Run all the ingredients together in a food processor just until smooth. Or, if you want the very best pesto, mash this in a mortar and pestle. The word Pesto is actually derived from the word pestle and which is how Pesto was first made, by crushing all the ingredients together in a mortar and pestle.
This makes enough for one pound of pasta. To serve, the pasta should be drained, returned to the pot and the Pesto added while the pasta is still hot. Try it for cooking!

Culinary Gardening
What's not to love about a garden filled with edible fruits and vegetables?
You can grow your very own "edible garden" in a number of ways - from dedicated vegetable gardens to mixing herbs and veggies with your flowerbeds, to containers, trellises or raised beds of culinary delights.

Planning for an edible garden doesn't really require anything different from bedding plants - the important thing to think about is the harvest. Plus, you can plant in successions, so when one batch of veggies is done producing, another is ready to harvest.
The first thing you should do is figure out where you're going to put your edible garden. Most vegetables and herbs like full sun and the right soil is crucial. Generally, a slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8 will be beneficial to most veggies. Good drainage is essential, regardless of whether you're planting in containers or in the ground. If you find you're having problems, raised beds will drastically improved soil drainage.
Most veggies and herbs adapt well to container gardening, allowing apartment dwellers to create a small edible garden...
• You can use anything from wood and plastic to clay and ceramic.
• Standard 6 to 10-in. (15 to 25-cm) containers work well for green onions, herbs or lettuce as long as they're at least 8 in. (20 cm) deep.
• For tomatoes, peppers, eggplants or pole beans, use 5-gallon (19-liter) containers. These plants need more space.
• If you grow your vegetables from seed, start them indoors first, then transplant them in your containers outdoors.
• Try to transplant your seedlings outdoors when a plant has its first two or three true leaves.
•
If space is an issue or if you want some vertical elements in your garden, use a trellis...
• You can do more than just pole beans. Vine crops like squash, pumpkins, melons and cucumbers can grow vertically with a little help.
• Try putting up your trellis at a slight angle to help coax the vines to grow up.
• You may need to tie some vines to the trellis and with heavier fruits - like melons - you can use slings attached to the trellis to help support their weight as they mature.
Raised beds are a great solution for culinary gardening...
• Not only do raised beds allow you to bring in good soil, but they provide superior drainage and cut down on weeds.
• Put the garden at a height where it's easier for many people to work on it if you are lucky enough to have a few helpers.
The lines of flower and vegetable gardening have blurred in recent years, so it's not uncommon to see lettuce or Swiss chard mixed in with annuals...
• Tomatoes can act as a colorful accent to a flower garden in late Summer.
• For a great height element in Autumn, use corn in your flowerbeds.
• There aren't really any rules when it comes to mixing and matching, however, it's important to only use products that are labeled safe for use with vegetables.
When to plant fruits and vegetables...
• Like flowers, there are cool-loving and heat-loving vegetables and herbs.
• Cool-loving crops can be planted in early Spring - sometimes even before the last frost. Examples of cool-loving vegetables are peas, broccoli, spinach, Brussels spouts, cabbage, collards, garlic, kale, leeks, lettuce, onions and Swiss chard.
• Plant heat-loving vegetables around the cool-loving ones so you can continue to harvest throughout the growing season (called successive planting). Examples of these types of plants are tomatoes, cucumbers and squash.
• If you plant cool and heat-loving vegetables and fruits together, be sure you cultivate the soil between the crops. A slow-release fertilizer works best with successive planting.
Courtesy of Ball Publishing

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://gardenexpressions.blogspot.com/2008/06/so-you-dont-have-room-to-garden-try-it.html' title='So you don't have room to garden? There are other alternatives for organic fertilizing, see below.
Here's some great information for Fertilizing Annuals and Perennials.

Meeting the fertilizer needs of your annuals and perennials doesn't have to be a mystery. Just like people, plants have basic nutritional needs. And just like people, they need more of some nutrients than they do of others. Plant nutrients can be grouped into macronutrients (those they need a lot of) and micro-nutrients (those they need in small amounts). Every package of fertilizer should give its nutritional value. Usually this is indicated by three numbers such as 10-20-10. Those numbers represent the macronutrients nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. 10-20-10 means that package contains 10% nitrogen, 20% phosphorous and 10% potassium by weight. Most fertilizers also contain some of the micro-nutrients. They may be specifically identified or the label may just indicate that they are included. Fortunately, almost all the micro-nutrients plants need are already available in the soil.

When you walk over to the fertilizer section of the garden center you will notice there are lots and lots of choices, some of them with the same nutritional analysis. How do you decide which one to use? If you can, take a few minutes to learn a little about synthetic vs. organic fertilizer and water soluble vs. dry formulas. They are all good products that will meet the needs of your plants, but you also want the fertilizer you choose to fit your needs. Some are easier to use than others, some are less expensive and some last longer than others. For more information, check out Bachman's Information Sheet Fertilizing Basics.

Why do annuals and perennials have special fertilizing needs when plants in nature get along without it?
In nature, plants rely on sunlight, rain and the nutrients in the soil. Nature limits the types and numbers of plants by the relative amounts of these basics available. In our landscapes, we grow many plants together with differing requirements, often in a variety of types of soil, surrounded with competing grass. If they are to thrive, we have to supplement what Nature can provide.

What makes fertilizing annuals and perennials any different than fertilizing any other plants?
In our climate, all plants are either herbaceous or woody. Woody plants have parts (such as trunks, branches, twigs, and in some cases evergreen needles or leaves) that live from season to season. These give them a big head start each year. Herbaceous plants do not have that advantage. They start from the soil line in spring and die back to the ground in fall. That means they have to expend a tremendous amount of energy during the growing season to produce all those stems and leaves and to help them out, we need to make sure they have the fertilizer they need.

Is there a difference between the fertilizer needs of annuals and perennials?
Annuals complete their life cycle in one growing season, so they do need more fertilizer than perennials that have the advantage of starting over each season from a hardy root system. Of course, annuals could live with the same amount of fertilizer as perennials or any other plants, but to get the most out of them, it pays to provide annuals with fertilizer regularly throughout the season.

Do all annuals need the same fertilizer?
Most annuals are grown for their prolific flowering but there are also some varieties grown for their beautiful foliage. Annual plants that are grown for their flowers need lots of phosphorus. That is the middle number in the analysis (10-20-10). Phosphorus encourages blooming as well as strong roots and disease resistance. Annuals grown for their foliage need less phosphorus and more nitrogen. Nitrogen is the first number in the analysis (10-20-10) and it encourages lots of leaf growth.

Is the same thing true with perennials?
Yes. And since most perennials only bloom for a short period each season, it is even more important than with annuals that they have healthy, attractive foliage.

What would be a good fertilizer for annuals and perennials?
A quality product such as MiracleGro Bloom Booster 10-20-10 works well with annuals and perennials, both flowering and foliage. With annuals, it can be applied monthly throughout the growing season. With perennials, it should only be applied twice; first when the plants have just started growing in early spring and again a month later.

Can I use a product such as Miracle-Gro?
Water-soluble fertilizer such as Miracle-Gro or Excel Gro are good for annuals. A really great product for promoting blooms is Schultz's Blooms Plus 10-60-10. Water soluble fertilizers are easy to use for the plants, but they are also used up quickly. Be sure to apply water-soluble fertilizers regularly (every 2-3 weeks throughout the growing season for annuals). Water soluble fertilizers can be used as an occasional quick snack for perennials, but shouldn't be the primary fertilizer.

What about slow-release fertilizers?
Products such as Osmocote that are applied early in the season and release their nutrients slowly for the next few months are good for annuals, but not for perennials. If you are using them on annuals, you may still want to give them an occasional boost with a water soluble.

Is there a good organic alternative?
Both Synchronicity and Milorganite are great balanced organic fertilizers that will work with annuals and perennials. Keep in mind that organic fertilizer are much slower to release and they might not produce quite as much growth or flowers. With annuals, organic fertilizers should be applied three or four times each season. A successful combination is to use an organic for the primary fertilizer and give the plants an occasional quick boost with a water-soluble such as Excel Gro or Miracle-Gro. With perennials, organic fertilizers should be applied in early spring and again in midsummer.

Are there any annuals or perennials that don't like to be fertilized?
There are some that need very little fertilizer and a few that seem to grow best without it. For instance, nasturtiums are the prettiest when they go without any extra fertilizer. Most of the prairie wildflowers (such as coneflower and liatris) are stronger when they are grown "lean", with very little fertilizer. Plants with succulent leaves such as moss roses and sedums as well as plants that naturally grow in boggy soil require very little fertilizer.

Are there any annuals or perennials that are especially heavy feeders?
Yes. There are a few annuals such as geraniums and impatiens that like to be fed faithfully. And the new "wave" petunias need to be fed weekly to do their best! Perennials aren't as demanding.

How will I know if the plants are getting enough fertilizer or the right fertilizer?
If your plants aren't growing or blooming as much as you think they should, they may need a boost of fertilizer. With some plants, the leaves will be a lighter green than normal if they need fertilizer. But several other factors can influence plant growth or color, so it is a good idea to bring a sample in and ask a horticulturist before assuming fertilizer is the answer.

Is there a danger of over-fertilizing?
Too much at one time can be hard on any plant, especially if the plant was even a little bit dry. Follow the directions on the package for application rates and you shouldn't have a problem. With all plants, fertilizing too often may result in excessive growth that is weak and susceptible to problems. Over-fertilized plants are more easily stressed by lack of water, excess water, insects or diseases. For perennials, too much fertilizing may weaken their root system and make them less winter-hardy.

Are there any other tips for fertilizing annuals and perennials?
Just be sure to follow all the directions on the package and try to spread the fertilizer evenly. It's always a good idea to water dry fertilizers after they are applied. This helps activate them right away and keeps them in place. Keep in mind that fertilizers will leach more quickly through sandy soils than in heavy, clay soils.

Author: Margaret Purcell and Mary Henry, Horticulturists

Garden Expression, Inc.
2050 Hwy 65 N
New Richmond WI 54026
246-0257
651-303-1711
thegardens@frontiernet.net

Hours:
Mon and Tues by chance or appointment
Wed-Fri 10-7
Sat 10-6
Sun 10-6

Ready, Set, Plant!

Wednesday is Service Learning Day in New Richmond.
